defined by a choleric, irascible, and intense disposition, thirteen is an oddly charismatically enigmatic woman. equipped with dry, acerbic, and heated world views, thirteen is a bright intellectual and caches many features of her personality with a veneer of mystery and sarcasm. she is also a self-proclaimed misanthrope and existential transcendentalist, with deep-rooted infatuations with nietzsche, thoreau, and kierkgaard. she has contempt for most societal institutions including government and religion. as a nihilist and atheist, thirteen is stormy, arrogant, self-absorbed, but enlightened with characteristics of willfulness, strong convictions, and passionate fiery.
due to trauma as a child and a turbulent young adult and adult life, thirteen is a masochist with a superiority complex. her fatalistic attitude dominates a strict morally coded life. she lives with an code of extreme self-reliance, at moments bordering on monomania and self-absorption, yet at other times, she is capable of incredible moments of altruism and pensive understanding. her clipped mercurial moods are accompanied by a tender kindness that many recognize though seldom experience first-handedly. thirteen is likened to a sufferer of a bipolar or dissociative disorder, though in moments of great lucidity, she is generally just equated as a typically eccentric mathematics research fellow.
h i s t o r y .
‘ ‘ thirteen was born in compton, massachusetts to elle and rocky bönnigheim, a small rural fishing community off rocky shores. as a fisherman, her father rocky had always been a statue of extremes: he was overwhelmingly arrogant in his pursuits and possessed lofty and impractical dreams. emigrated from munich, germany, he was a young man of supreme intelligence, but due to a childhood immersed in poverty and seven siblings to care for, rocky grew up with the similar misanthropic and fatalistic views that thirteen would be famous for. he married into elle’s family: it was a matrimony of convenience and a way to escape to america where he could carve out his future as a business man. eccentric and riddled with dark and brooding emotions, rocky would have two kids: firstborn essen and a boy three years her junior, arvid.[/blockquote]
perhaps cursed by some baneful star, rocky was never able to make it in business. in fact, the family was forced to carve out a living in the fishing industry. essen shared a loving but extremely limited relationship with her mother elle; essen often had to care for the very withdrawn and sickly woman. her father was strong and intimidating. in his throngs of megalomania, he often pushed unrealistic ambitions onto his children. essen possessed a strong resentment and bitterness towards this fatal relationship toward the end of rocky’s life... as for young brother arvid, essen shared a tender and pure relationship. he was peculiar as a child; afflicted with a severe personality disorder. this dissociative behavior became later classified as paranoid schizophrenia.
essen was unique as a child. she was very aware of a sort of budding intelligence in her psyche that led her to alienate herself from the community and kids her age. she spent her time completely immersed in school and her interests mainly pertained to physics, chemistry, mathematics, and astronomy. locking herself in her attic or down by the bayside, the girl was deemed a freak. she, however, was less than interested in getting to know her community. for her, her unusual talents in academia became a source of great pride and intimidation for the people around her. essen also became conscious of a sort of unique strength she had-- the ability to “see” the solution painted around her. this bohemian attitude became a gateway for her early experiments in drugs as a teenager.
essen’s only outside companionship would be her connection to an tahlit fishing family that lived in the bay region for generations (albeit their reclusive, amish-like living styles had been a source of great ostracization.) the tahlit clans recognized a great intelligence and precocious will within her. this relationship would be a source of great trauma for essen later in life. elle’s sickly countenance grew more and more serious. she would be hospitalized for an unknown mental illness and depression. on top of it all, increasingly dissatisfied with his fortunes, rocky began to target his acrimony at the the other fishing communities that littered the area. engorged with extreme racism for non-aryan peoples, he targeted his rage at the tahlit community, forbidding essen’s association with them. she dissented-- and continued her visitations in secrecy.
her own successes at fifteen in securing a spot in harvard’s undergraduate class fueled a complex jealousy of rocky. essen was reluctant to leave her tacit brother and ill mother to rocky, but she was also thrilled to be going somewhere where she knew she could fit into the intellectual community. in her first year as an undergraduate, however, she was summoned home to a brutal scene. her father had killed himself-- living an alcoholic and barely lucid life in his final minutes. essen’s mother elle was now recovered and living at home, taking care of arvid, who was undergoing treatment for paranoid schizophrenia.
between experimentations in drugs and bohemian life choices, essen began to study simplistic lifestyles. she finished undergraduate school in a shortened time-span and took on graduate school and residency in the east coast region through grants and scholarships. she began to address herself as “thirteen,” an arbitrary figure in the spiritual world. her forays into self-reliance and simple living took her into the new england mountain sides, the appalachian trails, and months living in wilderness. today, she is in her 2nd year as a research fellow after completing her doctorate at columbia. she is one of the youngest doctorate-holding members of the mathematics community, and a winner of the prestigious putnam, and various other grants and awards.
today, her mother lives alone, still in compton. arvid continues to reside in a mental institution, undergoing continuous treatment for schizophrenia. essen struggles to cope with issues of drugs, mental illnesses, and the lasting effects of her father’s suicide. she also grapples with her own impending usefulness in society-- and deals with the sentiment that she too may be affected by a genealogical predisposition of schizophrenia...
